VIP Night with Island Voices

Coastal Black Estate Winery, 2186 Endall Rd, Black Creek, BC V9J 1G8

We are very excited to share with you a rare glimpse into the magic (and fun!) of our Wednesday evening rehearsals. You are invited to join us on October 14 or 21 for an interactive evening which will allow you to experience our learning process, join us in song and be entertained by a short performance.

In keeping with the times, we are limiting the number of seats to 20 per evening with a maximum of 2 per reservation. Covid protocols will be in place to ensure your safety. This is a fund raiser for the choir, with a minimum $25 donation. Please email shannonfrappier@gmail.com to reserve.

Coastal Black has graciously and generously offered to support Island Voices by offsetting our facility rental fee with the purchase of a bottle of wine or cider.

The rehearsal starts at 6:30 with a physical warm-up for all. You are welcome to arrive early, any time after 6:00, so you can buy a bottle to take home and a glass to enjoy during the evening.

ISLAND VOICES EXPLORES THE WORLD OF WINTER AT DECEMBER CONCERTS

Although we might shiver at the thought of short, cold days and long, dark nights, we know there is much to enjoy about winter. With the wish that our feelings of love and peace might last long beyond Christmas, Island Voices presents “Such Spirit Through the Year”, featuring a wide variety of music about Christmas and winter.

“Winter can be a time of Christmas celebration and gathering as family, but it can also be a time of contemplation and introspection,” says choir director Jenn Forsland. “It can be a time of laughter and song around a bonfire, or a time of great beauty and silence during a gentle snowfall.”

The works she has chosen evoke feelings of love and peace, as well as just plain fun. Listeners will hear familiar carols, as well as works calling to mind medieval and Renaissance churches, songs about the starkness of the frozen earth, and the happiness of skaters on a pond. Musical styles will vary – from the warmth of John Rutter’s “All Bells in Paradise”, to the ethereal harmonies of Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Arumque”, to a big gospel version of “O Come All Ye Faithful”. And given the concert title, of course there will be the famous opening song from A Charlie Brown Christmas, “Christmas Time is Here”.

In keeping with the choir’s mandate to promote Canadian music, Director Forsland has chosen several works by Vancouver composers, including Trent Worthington’s “Three Winter Songs”, Larry Nickle’s “Miles to Go Before I Sleep”, and Diane Loomer’s “Yuletide Fires”.

Island Voices invites you to enjoy “Such Spirit Through the Year”, presented at Comox United Church at 7:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 6. There will also be a Sunday matinee at 2:30 pm Dec. 8 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Campbell River.

Tickets are $25 for adults, and $10 for students 18 and under, and will be available at Blue Heron Books (Comox), Benjamin Moore House of Colour (Courtenay) and The Music Plant (Campbell River). For more info, call 250-203-0471 (Campbell River) or 250-898-4773 (Comox/Courtenay).

Feedback from our very special 20th anniversary Gala Concerts in January of 2018

"Thank you and all of your choir members for such an amazing evening. The variety, versatility, and challenge of your pieces was astonishing, we were in awe. I was particularly enthralled at the clarity and purity of the held notes, your choir is well used to really listening to each other! I was also very impressed with how your positioning changed with each song, adapted to that particular song. Altogether, a truly wonderful evening very well spent, literally and figuratively. And the appies and refreshments were excellent as well. I hope Island Voices considers such venues again."

"It was a wonderful evening. Your choir is amazing, so professional and just a joy to listen to. I particularly enjoyed the commentary by your MC...  how great to hear a little about the history of your choir!  His anecdotes and readings were perfect!"

"What a delightful evening you introduced us too. I feel so nurtured by the soulful and beautiful music your choir shared tonight. We hope you feel as filled singing it, as we do having experienced it."
